COMMON CARPET
EPIRRHOE ALTERNATA
Fig 1

ADULT: Wingspan 20-25mm.   A common moth but a joyously recognisable one with a pleasing appearance.  The forewings range from grey to black and usually sport a darker cross band that has only one rather blunt outer projection. There are several other paler crossbands and lines and the hindwings are paler grey with a white fascia. LARVA: The larva is generally brown or green but is very variable in its markings. The foodplant is various Bedstraws. BEHAVIOUR:  Attracted to light. Easily flushed from lush vegetation through the daylight hours. HABITAT: Can be found almost anywhere with hedgerows, woodland, gardens and parkland frequent areas used. FLIGHT PERIOD: This species has two generations in the south, flying in May and June, and later in August and September. In northern Britain there is only one brood, in mid-July to mid-August. STATUS: Resident and common.
